Easing Anxiety with CBD

Cannabis oil to reduce anxiety, does it work?

spoon-and-cbd-oil

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is a cannabinoid found in cannabis plants. It is a non-psychoactive compound (it doesn’t get you ‘high’) that comes with a host of benefits, including treating anxiety disorders.

Looking at the available research, CBD has shown great promise in reducing anxiety and promoting a relaxed state of mind.

Now that the Thai laws have been amended to use CBD as a food ingredient, its timing couldn’t be better.

A press release by UNICEF published in October 2021 states that as many as 28% of adults in Thailand experience high-stress levels while 32% are at risk of depression. And more than that, people like you and me are likely to resort to harmful vices like alcohol and cigarettes to cope with it, thus only worsening the problem.

So, what can you do about it? In addition to popular therapeutic avenues like meditation, exercise, and a good night’s sleep, you should also look at CBD oil for anxiety.

This excellent extract from the Cannabis Sativa plant has proven itself to be an effective, proven remedy for your body, mind, and soul. So let’s take a look.

How does CBD work?

How does THC interact with the body?

The Endocannabinoid System was first discovered in 1992. It controls the most important organs and functions in humans and animals, such as controlling anxiety and stress.

Cannabidiol interacts with the body via the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). We will not go into detail here, but here is what you need to know:

  • The ECS is present throughout your body, including the immune system, brain, limbs, spinal cord, organs
  • It is involved in regulating plenty of critical functions like sleep, mood, appetite, memory, metabolism, combating chronic pain, inflammation, and more
  • It is vital in maintaining the state of homeostasis in our human body and acts as a ‘master regulator’
  • Receptors are present throughout the ECS (CB1 and CB2) which allow for cannabinoids to interact with the body

Since ECS is so crucial to our survival – physically and mentally – it comes as no surprise to see cannabinoids like THC and CBD affecting how we feel.

From anxiety and mental health point of view, it is thought that CBD may alter serotonin signals although, more clarity and research is needed.

Serotonin is a hormone that is crucial in stabilizing our mood, happiness, and feelings of well-being. Low serotonin levels are linked with anxiety and depression. While this is traditionally remedied with prescription drugs like Sertraline and Flexeril, there is solid research to believe that CBD can be just as helpful.

Research on CBD for anxiety

  • 2015 review study found evidence that CBD can be used as an effective treatment for several anxiety disorders like generalised anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder
  • A 2020 study explored the impact of cannabidiol prescription in clinical practice in New Zealand. The research found that all participating groups reported improvement in their overall quality of life after three weeks of CBD use. Those who were using CBD for anxiety/depression were able to perform their daily tasks better with reduced anxiety symptoms
  • Similarly, the authors of a review paper published in 2020 observed that substantial evidence to support the use of CBD in treating anxiety and related disorders. However, the results vary greatly depending on the dosages.
  • Looking at depression, a case study found that adolescents with social anxiety and depression reported a significant drop in anxiety and depression symptoms, following an eight-week course of CBD treatment.

While these studies are among the many that vouch for the therapeutic benefits of CBD, you should note that:

  • The sample size is far too small
  • Long-term effects have not been explored
  • More research is needed

Nonetheless, the science, combined with the anecdotal evidence, suggests that CBD oil can work for anxiety and depression. As a user, you do not have a lot to lose.

How to take CBD oil for anxiety?

CBD Oil

One thing that is yet to be established via research is standardized dosing, that is, how much CBD oil should one take for anxiety.

2019 study suggested that a dose range of 300 – 600 mg reduced anxiety symptoms in the participants.

From our experience, it varies from person to person and it is best to start with a small dose (40mg to 50mg per day) and then take it up from there.

In addition to CBD extracts, there are other ways to use cannabidiol such as edibles, teas, and gummies.

It is worth noting that CBD is not addictive. Given its non-psychoactive nature, there is no tendency for abuse or dependence.

However, CBD use may lead to side effects such as weight loss, reduced appetite, fatigue, and drowsiness. It may also interact with other medications – we advise you to consult with your doctor if you’re worried about abovementioned.

A natural supplement for a stressful life

In an age where high stress and anxiety seem to be the way of life, it is important to take a step back, relax, and look after our mental health.
