From anxiety and mental health point of view, it is thought that CBD may alter serotonin signals although, more clarity and research is needed. 

Serotonin is a hormone that is crucial in stabilizing our mood, happiness, and feelings of well-being. Low serotonin levels are linked with anxiety and depression. While this is traditionally remedied with prescription drugs like Sertraline and Flexeril, there is solid research to believe that CBD can be just as helpful.

Research on CBD for anxiety

  • 2015 review study found evidence that CBD can be used as an effective treatment for several anxiety disorders like generalised anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder
  • A 2020 study explored the impact of cannabidiol prescription in clinical practice in New Zealand. The research found that all participating groups reported improvement in their overall quality of life after three weeks of CBD use. Those who were using CBD for anxiety/depression were able to perform their daily tasks better with reduced anxiety symptoms
  • Similarly, the authors of a review paper published in 2020 observed that substantial evidence to support the use of CBD in treating anxiety and related disorders. However, the results vary greatly depending on the dosages.
  • Looking at depression, a case study found that adolescents with social anxiety and depression reported a significant drop in anxiety and depression symptoms, following an eight-week course of CBD treatment.

While these studies are among the many that vouch for the therapeutic benefits of CBD, you should note that:

  • The sample size is far too small
  • Long-term effects have not been explored
  • More research is needed

Nonetheless, the science, combined with the anecdotal evidence, suggests that CBD oil can work for anxiety and depression. As a user, you do not have a lot to lose.

How to take CBD oil for anxiety?


One thing that is yet to be established via research is standardized dosing, that is, how much CBD oil should one take for anxiety.

2019 study suggested that a dose range of 300 – 600 mg reduced anxiety symptoms in the participants.

From our experience, it varies from person to person and it is best to start with a small dose (40mg to 50mg per day) and then take it up from there.
